Garden Camp Week 5: Pollinators

Hello from the garden! We've been busy bees at garden camp, and with wild & cultivated flowers blooming all around us, it seemed like the perfect time to turn our attention to our dear friends and garden teammates: pollinators!  Humans have been farming for about 10,000 years, but pollinators have been co-evolving with flowering plants for about 100 million years. The friendship between animals and plants who produce flowers & fruit is truly ancient, and the pollinating animals we studied today are still carrying out this time-honored practice of trading their ability to pollinate for flowers' tasty nectar and pollen. And we rely on this partnership for so much of what we eat!  We began the day by studying a collection of flowering and fruiting plants from gardens and roadsides alike, talking about how the different traits of flowers (size, color, scent, shape, when they bloom) match up with the type of animal that pollinates them. Welcome to the BES Garden Club Blog!

This blog will keep you up to date on the BES garden! On Tuesday's garden club members work in the garden during lunch recess.  On Friday's grade three and four students are welcome to work in the garden during 20 point time.   From time to time classes do integrative gardening projects that are linked to their class curriculum.   Here are a couple of photos from the third and fourth grade unit on paperwhites.   We grew them to sell at the Winter Faire and learned about bulbs, economics, and biomes.

May 23 garden club

Garden club was busy today! First we all harvested greens: lettuce, spinach, chard, kale leaves, and kale florets (which look like mini broccolis).  Gardeners who wanted to take greens home did so, and others harvested for our snack! We had a special guest, Anna Wind, who taught us how to make fresh spring rolls.   So we washed, chopped, tore and cut the greens, plus radishes, cilantro, mint, and chives from Mil's Farm just down the road, and some carrots.  Then Anna showed us how to roll up all these into a rice spring roll wrapper.  Yum! The kids can't wait to make them again! (If you are a parent reading this, it is a super easy, super healthy, delicious snack that kids could make pretty much by themselves!) We also pulled the chard out of greenhouse bed 1, added compost, and planted cucumber seeds! Good job, gardeners! And thanks, Anna! harvesting and grazing preparing veggies for spring rolls eating spring rolls, YUM!!!!
